The Sandwich Park District has announced that World War II Army veteran Charles Rapp will serve as the 2016 Freedom Days parade grand marshal.
The parade will be Saturday, July 2, commencing at 10 a.m. in Sandwich.
Rapp served his country from 1944 to 1946 as a Tec 5 in the U.S. Army. Rapp is a member of Lewis P. Schultz Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1486 and resides in Sandwich.
He is a well-decorated veteran, seeing combat in Ardennes, Rhineland, and the occupation of Central Europe. Rapp was wounded in combat in 1945 and was awarded the following decorations and citations: Victory medal, American Theater ribbon, European/African/Middle Eastern Theater ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, Overseas Service Bar, Army Occupation of Germany, Good Conduct medal and Purple Heart medal.
Rapp also was awarded the SS/M1 Rifle Combat Infantry Badge. His military occupation was a 511 Armorer, a small arms repair specialist, in the 9th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 9th Armored Division.
In a statement, the park district said it is “an honor to have Mr. Rapp as our grand marshal in honor of his heroism and military service.”
