Two Plano High School students were hosted recently at a regular meeting of the Plano Rotary Club in what is becoming a monthly tradition as the club and the school district partner to encourage academic achievement.
Junior Aubrey Flodstrom and senior Yasmine Salgado attended a luncheon meeting to meet Rotary members, to learn the mission and focus of the Plano Rotary Club, and to share their hopes for the future.
Aubrey is the daughter of Mark and Stacy Flodstrom. She is currently ranked eighth in the junior class and is active in National Honor Society, student council, golf, softball, PRAISE, and SLIP – the Student Leadership Initiative Program.
Yasmine is the daughter of Abel and Manuela Salgado. As a senior, she is already planning her college career. She will attend Aurora University, where she has been accepted into the nursing program. Yasmine is active in National Honor Society, band and PRAISE.
Principal Eric Benson has been hosting students as his guests every month at the Rotary meetings. Regarding Aubrey and Yasmine, he said, “These two students coordinated all of our recent activities to fundraise for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Together they helped raise over $3,200 to fight childhood cancer.”
Benson added, “These students did a phenomenal job of planning, organizing and running activities to raise funds for this great cause. This was the sixth annual fundraiser for St. Baldrick’s at Plano High School.”
In addition to encouraging volunteerism and service to the community, Plano Rotary Club also offers scholarship opportunities to youth pursuing their college education.
The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders.
Plano Rotary Club meets weekly at noon. Meetings include lunch and information, guest speakers, and reports on club projects, including the Interact Club at Plano High School, Cook Woods Property in rural Plano, and scholarship projects to support local youth.
