Letter: Smoke and mirrors operation

To the Editor:

Republican President Calvin Coolidge stated “I want the people of America to be able to work less for the government and more for themselves. I want them to have the rewards of their own industry. This is the chief meaning of freedom.” Apparently one Illinois senator and 15 Illinois House “Republicans” who believe themselves wiser and more intelligent than us commoners did not get the memo and voted to raise our taxes. The media along with these 16 Republicans and their leadership I believe operated under a cloak of smoke and mirrors.

Republicans Steve Andersson, Mike Fortner, Sara Jimenez, Robert Pritchard, Terri Bryant, Norine Hammond, Charles Meier, David Reis, John Cavaletto, David Harris, Christian Mitchell, Michael Unes, CD Davidsmeyer, Chad Hays and Reginald Phillips with Andersson leading the charge, gathered enough votes to raise taxes. Remember Pelosi’s line “We have to pass the bill to see what’s in it”? How did these folks manage to read a 538 page bill that came out one hour before the vote and vote for it? Why did the House Minority Leader allow a Republican to muster votes for Madigan and how is it that some Democrats who coincidentally are up for re-election vote against it? Republican Senator Radogno suddenly resigned last week. Will Radogno be leaving the state with a pension we are funding or will she stay here and bear the tax burden with us? They justify that tax increases are needed to keep the state operating and soluble. Why does Illinois need more operating money when people and businesses have left the state in droves? The state is said to have a deficit of $9.6 billion from the past 10 years. The state raised income, license plate fees, driver’s license and tollway taxes along with other fees plus the state got $22.3 billion dollars in stimulus money, where did it go?

Join me in boycotting the Illinois GOP SCC, ask for a federal probe into the stimulus question, demand answers to questions along with demanding resignations to clear up this financial and political mess. Thomas Sowell said that if saving society comes down to barbarians and wimps, the barbarians are going to win. Illinois Republicans are courageous in taking “your” shirt off your back and giving it to somebody else. Remember this as you get your check this week and watch the price of gasoline and higher store taxes this week.
