The School District 308 Board of Education members approved the appointment of the district’s new communications director at their meeting on Monday, July 31.

Theresa Komitas will serve as the district’s communications director, replacing Brian Graves, whose contract was not renewed by the district.

Komitas began her tenure with the district on Tuesday, Aug. 1, coming from Northwestern Medicine, where she served as the director of marketing and public relations. She also spent more than 10 years at the KishHealth System as the marketing and public relations director. Komitas attended Kishwaukee College, received her Bachelor of Science degree in health promotion from Northern Illinois University, and earned her Master of Business Administration degree in health care administration from Kaplan University.

Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin praised Komitas’ appointment, saying, “Mrs. Komitas will be a great addition to our administrative team. She brings an energetic presence, innovative skills, and we believe her contribution will assist in serving our staff.”

Komitas will earn an annual salary of $87,000 as communications director for the district’s 2017-18 fiscal year, which began July 1 and runs through June 30, 2018. Since Komitas started work with the district Aug. 1, her pro-rated annual salary will be $84,860.64. The salary is less than $89,500 salary paid to her predecessor in the position, Graves. She will also be afforded $100,000 in term life insurance and long-term disability benefits, as well as $250 a month for in-district travel expenses.

“I am excited to join the district and begin making connections throughout the community to strengthen relationships and open lines of communication,” Komitas said.

Komitas’ appointment was approved by the board, with board secretary Lauri Doyle and board member Toni Morgan casting opposition votes.
