Crayons for Kids donates 30,000-plus school supplies to area students

Thousands of area children started out the school year with brand new school supplies thanks to the efforts of Crayons for Kids, an annual school supply drive conducted by Marmion Academy with Rosary High School that benefits in-need area students.

For two weekends each summer, Marmion and Rosary students and parent volunteers work at local Jewel-Osco stores to collect school supply donations and monetary donations from customers.

An estimated 30,000 individual units of supplies and close to $15,000 were collected the last two weekends this July.

All donations were immediately boxed and delivered to over 75 in-need schools and organizations throughout the Fox Valley.

“Crayons for Kids allows the Marmion Academy and Rosary High School communities the incredible opportunity to live out the values that our faith teaches us, most especially that of selfless service to others. Many of us take having basic school supplies for granted, but there are a significant number who do not have access to even the basics. It is a privilege for us to be able to facilitate this program, as we are able to support those children in our community who are in need and aid them in having a well-rounded educational experience. I cannot thank all of our student, parent and staff volunteers enough for their willingness to be involved and give back in this way,” said Mark Malkowski, director of campus ministry at Marmion Academy.

Marmion Academy senior Jack Twitty of Geneva is a student coordinator of this event.

“Going out into the community for such an outstanding cause truly shows the love and selflessness people in our world still possess,” Twitty said. “Crayons for Kids has played a pivotal role not only in helping local schools but bringing the students of Marmion and Rosary closer with each other and with God. Being a part of something bigger than myself like Crayons for Kids has helped me grow as a Christian disciple and leader. I’m so humbled to be a part of such an amazing organization.”
