Mystery Diner: Lucky's offers great Italian beef, a fun atmosphere – and slots!

Feeling lucky?

The Mystery Diner decided to try his hand this week with a brand-new establishment in Kendall County, Lucky’s Prime Rib Beef n Dogs.

The restaurant opened its doors in August on Douglas Road, just north of Route 30 on the site of the former Pizza Hut, in Montgomery. The owners, the Manfre family, are longtime Montgomery residents that wanted to create a great family atmosphere in their neighborhood.

Few culinary delights scream “Chicago” like a good Italian beef or dog. Lucky’s lives up to it, with a twist.

We ventured down the street to Lucky’s on a warm early-September Sunday evening.

We walked into Lucky’s and were greeted pleasantly and invited to peruse the menu and order at the counter. The Mystery Diner couldn’t help but notice the inspiration for Lucky’s name.

A carousel of slot machines, touted on Lucky’s website as “the best slots room in the area – period!” is in the middle of the restaurant, surrounded by a ring of booths and tables. The Mystery Diner’s companion, always in the mood to try her luck, gave the slot machines a whirl as we waited for our food. For those interested in making a night of it, the video slots are open Mondays through Saturdays past kitchen hours.

The Mystery Diner, though, came to eat.

Lucky’s offers an extensive sandwich menu – from burgers and hot dogs to meatball sandwiches and “combos.” It even includes a breakfast menu, paninis, chicken wings and pizza. Full dinners, including a ribeye steak, gyros platter, shrimp platter and more, are on the way.

I went with a classic Italian beef, served with a generous helping of french fries. Tender mounds of succulent beef are piled high on a crusty roll, drizzled with either hot or sweet peppers. The Mystery Diner couldn’t quite finish his huge sack of fries, but no to-go bag was needed for the beef.

My companion, likewise in the mood for a little red meat, opted for the prime rib sandwich. The cut of beef is served on garlic bread and covered with lettuce and tomato. This party was satisfied.

The slots didn’t spin our way, but we agreed that Lucky’s was a neighborhood establishment we’d try again. For a good beef or dog down the street, and a fun atmosphere, Lucky’s is a great place to cash in.
