Volleyball: Reapers take fourth at Sandwich Invitational

The Plano volleyball team took first in their pool and fourth overall at the eight-team Sandwich Invitational on Sept. 9.

Plano beat Reed-Custer 17-21, 21-13, 15-6, lost to Seneca 21-23, 23-21, 17-16 and beat Sandwich's JV team 21-13, 21-11 in pool play. The Reapers (8-6) lost in the semifinals to Streator Woodland 25-9, 25-18 and dropped a 25-17, 25-18 to Reed-Custer in the third-place match.

For the tournament Alyssa Dolan had 24 kills, 36 service points, 42 digs, seven aces and three asissts; Allie Cross had 31 digs, 20 points, 13 kills and three aces; Kaylee Read had 31 assists, 20 kills, 21 points and 21 digs; Kenzie Waldrop had 32 assists, 22 points and 15 digs; Lexi Tisberger had 12 kills and four blocks; Anabelle Miller had 29 digs and 18 points; and Alyssa Smith had 22 digs, 13 points and three aces.

Sydney Coselman had 12 kills and Sammi LaBolle had 17 – nine coming in the decisive third game – as Sandwich (14-2) topped Streator Woodland in the championship match.

Coselman's kill capped a 6-0 run that gave the Indians the lead for good in Game 2, at 18-12, and they never looked back. Sandwich ran out to a 9-0 lead in the clincher.

"Honestly, I think it just came from our gut," Coselman said. "This is our home tournament. We weren't serving well, and we weren't passing it well. Sometimes you just have to work with what you got."

The Reapers previously beat Reed-Custer 28-26, 26-25 on Sept. 7. Read had eight assists, four kills and four digs; Waldrop 15 assists; Dolan seven kills and seven digs; Cross seven kills and 14 digs; Tisberger six kills; Smith 11 digs; and Miller seven digs.

Reed-Custer won the sophomore match 21-25, 25-23, 25-18 and at the freshman level 28-26, 26-25.
