Scenes from Sandwich’s past: The library

The Sandwich Historical Society offers this photo of the brick library with the stately pillars at the northeast corner of Eddy and Center streets. It was built in 1941 and 1942 for $40,000. The Westminster chimes were installed in 1954 as a memorial to all people who had made private gifts to the library. The mezzanine was added in 1958. The library is now the Sandwich District Library, which is planning to build a new facility on land it purchased on South Main Street.
