To the Editor:
The tragic event that occurred in Las Vegas still dominates the news. Our nation grieves for the many lost lives and injured. Authorities and the media continue to wonder what Stephan Paddock’s motive was. I think Paddock’s brother gave the root cause when he stated the Stephan Paddock had no connection to religion, political party or any other group or organization. Based on that statement it can be concluded that Stephan Paddock had no moral compass and his decisions therefore were made only on what suited him.
Consideration for others’ lives was not important to him. Violence depicted in movies, television and video games undoubtedly has contributed to desensitizing many and leads to more violent behavior. It is time to put God back into our country as our founders intended and our country’s moto, “in God We Trust” states.
Another item dominating the news is the NFL protests by some players taking a knee during the National Anthem as a protest to unfair police treatment of minorities. There are many ways to protest and free speech is guaranteed by The Constitution: however, this is an act that is disrespectful to our national anthem and flag. Had those at Fort McHenry, many who died, not prevailed in keeping our flag flying during a horrendous British attack, those football players would not have the freedom that they enjoy and their high salaries.
I ask those high paid football players, taking a knee, what they have done to serve others? I suggest a review of the history of the Star Spangled Banner for anyone who thinks taking a knee during the playing of it being acceptable as opposed to being a disrespectable act.
Meanwhile, on the home front, the Oswego District 308 School Board presented their budget for the next year. This fiscal year 2017 the budget is $1.7 million in the black due to a $3 million late payment by the state. The projected budget for next year has a $4 million deficit and the deficit each year is more growing to a projected $8 million deficit in 2023. This is a government body that expects to tax more in every future year just like the Oswego village and their tax increases. Remember this when you vote in future elections and elect responsible fiscal conservatives.
