The VFW Auxiliary of Sandwich worked with all the kindergarten students in Sandwich School District 430 last May to take part in the Patriotic Coloring Contest sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary.
Students from all seven kindergarten classes colored pictures from the VFW Auxiliary and the Sandwich VFW Auxiliary judged the entries, then awarded the winner of each class with a patriotic storybook.
The members of the Auxiliary also visited the students at each school and talked to the kindergartners about what the words to the Pledge of Allegiance mean, and passed out small American flags and coloring books about the Pledge of Allegiance to all the kindergartners.
The Auxiliary also presented Prairie View, Haskin and Woodbury schools with American flags for their flagpoles.
The winners in May were Annie Butler from Mrs. Corbin’s class, Sara Timmerman from Mrs. Kedzierski’s class, Nevaeh Parker from Mrs. Forester’s class, Eva Hernandez from Mrs. Well’s class, Rhaeva Paver from Mrs. Schmitt’s class, Addison French from Mrs. Mathis’s class and Hayle Weihrauch from Mrs. Heinekamp’s class.
The winners from each kindergarten class were then forwarded to the VFW Auxiliary’s district for judging at the district level.
This year Annie Butler from Prairie View won third place at the district level and was awarded a prize.
She was presented with her prize Nov. 10 during the Veterans Day activities at Prairie View Elementary School.
