To the Editor:
As an engineer by training, I was taught to always first look at problems, find the cause, and then work to fix it. We can all agree that middle class families in Illinois are over-taxed, but Congressman Hultgren’s solution just makes things worse for taxpayers, undermines health insurance and sets up Medicare and Social Security for huge cuts.
On Tuesday, Congressman Hultgren once again voted for a tax cut that gives away billions to the super wealthy and corporations, but does little or nothing to help the tax burden for the middle class. In fact, many families in the 14th District will pay more in taxes.
First the problems with this bill: it is a massive corporate tax cut, and it cuts taxes for the wealthiest taxpayers, too. To pay for those cuts, the bill adds at least $1 trillion to the national debt, and middle-class families – especially in Illinois – will get hit hard with a reduction in one of the most important middle class tax deductions: the state and local tax deduction. To make matters worse, the corporate tax cuts are permanent, but the middle-class tax cuts taxes expire.
This “tax” bill also includes a provision that tries to undermine health care in this country. By repealing the individual mandate, Congressman Hultgren voted cut $380 billion from health care. This will increase cost for people already on health insurance and cause 13 million people to lose health insurance.
We already know how Congressman Hultgren will try to make up for all the debt run up by these corporate tax cuts. Speaker Ryan has said they will work to cut Social Security and Medicare next year, cuts retirees and those hoping to retire with any sense financial security can ill afford.
Congressman Hultgren had a choice. He chose to sell out middle-class families to big corporations and his wealthy donors. And once again, the middle class gets left behind.
