There was a time when applicants for an Illinois driver’s license were asked who should yield to the other driver at an unmarked intersection. But those days are gone, according to Sandwich City Council members.
So, they discussed at the Jan. 22 meeting having some type of traffic control sign at several city intersections.
According to Mayor Rick Olson, this can not only make such intersections safer to drive through, but also can help determine which driver had the right-of-way if there is a crash.
Olson said discussions were held years ago about every intersection having some kind of traffic control. He said controls can save lives because there is more chance for a crash if there are no controls.
A proposed ordinance listing 15 intersections that are not controlled was on the agenda for possible action.
Olson said they could either have a first reading of the ordinance with a vote to be held at the next council meeting or they could waive the first reading and vote on the ordinance at this meeting.
"There are several intersections in the community that are unregulated and this is a way of trying to clean all that up," he said.
Alderman Les Redden had prepared a list of 15 streets which were included in the proposed ordinance he had submitted.
Alderman Pete Dell said he would like to have more discussion on the ordinance before voting on it, so Redden went through his list of 11 possible stop intersections and four possible yield intersections.
He said there should be a stop sign on Second Street at Elm Street, and one for northbound and southbound traffic on Mechanic Street at First Street.
"That's the one by the post office and there's never been a stop sign there, which I think is crazy," he said.
Others are northbound Mechanic at Second, northbound Washington Street at Fourth Street, eastbound and westbound on First Street at Ash Street, southbound Wolfe Street at Lisbon Street, southbound Green Street at Lisbon, northbound Wolfe at Crofoot Street, northbound Green at Crofoot, northbound West Street at Boulevard Street, northbound Spruce Street at Knights Road, and southbound on Karen Road at Webb Street.
Redden said the four yield signs being recommended are all for eastbound and westbound traffic on Joles Street at First, Second, Third and Fourth streets.
Olson said there may be others that can be added later.
"I think there should be some kind of traffic control at every intersection," he said.
So the proposed ordinance will be placed on the agenda for possible vote at the next council meeting on Feb. 12.
