Girls Basketball: Reapers wrap up regular season, start regionals with rival Sandwich

Plano's girls basketball team is about to get a double dose of its biggest rival.

The Reapers (15-10, 7-3 Interstate Eight) wrap up the regular season at home Thursday against Sandwich, which has already clinched a share of the conference title. Then the two teams turn around and open up regional play at 7 p.m. Monday, the winner to play regional host Sycamore.

Plano has already beaten Sandwich twice, the last time in the conference tournament.

"Playing Sandwich is always fun. This year they've got a great team and we've been fortunate to beat them twice," Plano coach John Chernick said. 'I'm sure they will come out ready and focused. The fourth game will really present a challenge. I'd hate to see things end up badly because two teams are just tired of seeing each other."

Plano is coming off a 62-41 win over Streator this past Thursday. Lily Fernandez scored 17 points and Kyla Waller added 13 for the Reapers, which led 21-11 after a quarter and 35-20 at halftime. Maddie Jude added nine points and MaKenzie Vann eight. Plano had a home game with Rosary Monday postponed because of inclement weather.

"I feel like when we are all healthy, we're playing pretty well," Chernick said. "We look really good at times, and and then, like a lot of young teams, we struggle to play long stretches."
