Orchard Road, I-88 interchange to become a work zone

Contractors scheduled to start ramp reconstruction project

Kendall County area residents who use Orchard Road to access the I-88 Tollway in Aurora should expect to encounter construction at the Orchard Road tollway interchange beginning today, Thursday, Aug. 9.

The Illinois Tollway Authority has announced that weather permitting the left side of the ramps connecting westbound I-88 to Orchard Road and Orchard Road to eastbound I-88 will close from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily for shoulder work in preparation for ramp reconstruction.

Beginning the week of Aug. 13, traffic on the ramps is scheduled to shift to the left to provide a work zone on the right. In addition, one turn lane on the ramp connecting westbound I-88 to Orchard Road is scheduled to close. Delays are expected. Motorists can also use the Route 31 exit to reach Orchard Road.

The ramps will remain open during construction. Electronic message signs and construction signage will be put in place to alert drivers in advance.

The improvements on I-88 will extend the life of the interchange improving travel in the area and providing convenient access to local communities and support economic opportunities. This work is part of the tollway’s 15-year, $14 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future.

Construction is being coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Kane County, City of Aurora and the Village North Aurora as well as local fire and police departments.

Maps and construction information about the I-88 Interchange Improvements is available on the Tollway’s website at Illinoistollway.com via the Interactive Tollway map and under “Projects Overview” in the Explore Projects section.
