SANDWICH – Jeff Lay, art teacher at Sandwich School District 430 for 14 years, said “it has been a joy to see their growth” when describing his art students at a recent Sandwich School Board meeting.
The last six years he’s been teaching at Sandwich Middle School, where he encourages sixth- through eighth-grade students to become excited about art.
Lay said, “The big thing is, I see everyone in sixth grade.” He’s told the students that “there’s something other than sports” in which to become involved.
Many of the students have been painting murals in the school’s hallway, beautifying their school. Lay also talked of encouraging students to have formal art education to help with their talents.
At the conclusion of Lay’s talk, there was a slide show of multiple colorful paintings, designs, drawings and other artistry created by the students that amazed the audience, who showed their appreciation by applauding.
Garrett Ryan, who is assistant principal and athletic director at Sandwich Middle School, said, “Doing murals and large projects around the building is one way to get kids to take ownership in the building and have pride in their accomplishments in school.”
