Helping the Panthers (6-5, 3-1) make their offensive climb was freshman guard Mia Moore. After senior Angelina Schlinger started the run with a 3-pointer at the four-minute mark of the third quarter, Moore scored on the next two possessions. She helped extend the Oswego lead by hitting a 3-pointer, and then came back with a smooth jumper seconds later. “We were moving the ball really well and found open shots,” said Moore, who scored 12 points. “We were able to get a big lead and hold it for the rest of the game.” (Sean King)Oswego senior Jenelle Rogers added a layup to extend the lead to 43-31 going into the fourth quarter, but Yorkville wouldn’t go away. “They started pressing in man-to-man and it got to us a little bit. We couldn’t inbound the ball very well,” Carlson said. (Sean King)The Foxes defense started the fourth quarter playing aggressive defense, holding the Panthers scoreless for five minutes. “They’re fighters and we’ve challenged them so much this year. They did a great job of never caving in and that was the message when we were down,” Yorkville coach Kim Wensits said. “I knew we weren’t going to quit.” (Sean King)Yorkville’s efforts to cut down the Oswego lead began midway through the third quarter with free throws and a couple key outside shots. Senior Lilly Guerra followed her miss on a 3-pointer and lined up a successful attempt from the corner. Then with a minute left in the third, junior Ellie Maaske made another basket from deep. “A lot of that is veteran experience. We have five seniors and all five of them were playing well,” Wensits said. “Our team was feeding into that and really playing with energy.” (Sean King)Despite the Foxes’ reinvigorated offensive play, Oswego settled down late in the fourth to put the game away. Moore ended the Panthers’ five-minute scoring drought with a layup at the 4:23 mark. From then on, Oswego took control the rest of the way. “We got a couple turnovers after we switched and ran a little zone defense and I think that was helpful,” Carlson said. Julia Henrikson scored 13 points and McKenna Engler nine for Oswego. (Sean King)“It’s a good conference win for us,” Carlson said. “We have tough games all the time and every win matters.” Lexi Meyer scored 11 points and Guerra 10 for Yorkville (3-7, 1-3). “Defensively, we still have work to do in terms of containing our dribble penetration. Offensively, we need to keep looking for kick outs rather than taking difficult shots over taller defenders,” Wensits said. “Those are things we’ll correct as the season goes on.” (Sean King)Oswego’s Danielle Dorilio (14) rebounds the ball against Yorkville in Oswego Dec. 13.
