Atrevete Confections is a new addition to downtown Montgomery, opening in early May.
Located at 216 N. River St., across from South Moon BBQ and right next door to the new Grumpy Gaucho brick-and-mortar location, Atrevete offers pastries, desserts, coffee, lunch items and a lovely atmosphere that combines the classic with the (mid-century) modern.
I had been following Atrevete on social media, so when I stopped by on a recent weekday afternoon I was not at all surprised at how gorgeous and tasty the food looked, but I was surprised at the spaciousness and stylishness of the store's interior.
A number of tables lines the north wall, while the south side of the dining room is lined by a handsome bar that is original to the building and dates back to the 1930s, according to a staffer. In the corner is a comfy couch on which patrons can lounge and sip their coffee or tea or munch on a macaron.
The French macaron – sometimes spelled macaroon but not to be confused with the chewy coconut macaroon cookie – is a meringue-based confection that resembles a sandwich cookie. But it's not like an Oreo or anything resembling it – it's light yet rich and decadent.
Atrevete has a variety of macaron flavors every day, as well as a variety of pastries such as cinnamon rolls, scones, brownies and much more.
I ordered four macarons to taste – strawberries and cream, pistachio, vanilla and unicorn. All were decadent and full of flavor, and I could barely finish them.
The real centerpiece of my visit to the shop, however, was the key lime cheesecake. It was a mini cheesecake, but the flavor was anything but miniature.
A dense graham cracker crust held a substantial amount of key lime cheesecake filling, which had just the right balance of sweet and tart, and topped with a thick dollop of whipped cream. That was the star of the show and I highly recommend getting it if they have it when you visit.
The clerk behind the counter told me that Atrevete also serves lunch items such as sandwiches on occasion. In addition, they have a booth at the Oswego Country Market which is downtown Oswego every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Their products can also be found at Ten Drops Coffee in Plainfield, Chapterhouse Coffee and Cafe in the Batavia Public Library, and the Farmers Market at St. Johns in Naperville, according to their website.
Atrevete is a wonderful addition to downtown Montgomery, and we hope it sticks around for a long time.
