Down to their last out in the seventh, the Foxes went to pinch-hitter Lauren LaFollette with two outs and Lexi Meyer standing on first base after a hard-hit infield single. LaFollette, with two strikes, lifted a double to the fence in left-center field, just out of the reach of Spartans left fielder to score Meyer and tie the game.
“That’s one of the hardest things you can ask players to do is to step in and have one at-bat and get a hit, and she did it," Yorkville coach Jory Regnier said. "In that position, it’s so difficult, but she executed, she stayed in it, even going down, 0-2, and got the job done. She put us in a position to win.”
The Foxes continued the threat with runners on first and third, but Faith Reynolds picked up the strikeout. Reynolds stuck out 11, tossed 105 pitches and did not issue a walk.
"[Reynolds is] an emotional kid," Carpenter said. "She hides it well, but this was a hard game for her to throw. For Mindy being a senior to get the hit, and for Gracyn finding a way to get on base and scoring as a senior just seems fitting.”
The Spartans scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning. Amanda Swedberg scooted home all the way from first after a Faith Reynolds sacrifice bunt, as the ball was thrown into left field and past the left fielder, who was backing up third base on the bunt.
