How to inspect your jewelry: What exactly are we looking for?

Everything wears out - your favorite shoes, your best jeans, and yes, your jewelry. Whether you’re wearing a cherished heirloom or a new piece you dearly love, not only do you need to keep it clean, but in good condition to avoid breakage, missing stones or loss.

When making a visual inspection what exactly are we looking for? Here are a few tips from Avanti Jewelers.

For rings, first look at the ring sideways. Is the bottom thinner than the rest of the band? The band should be approximately the thickness of a nickel. Does it look bent? Is it worn thin? If so, you may need to have it reshanked to avoid breaking.

Do the  prongs that hold the stones in place look flat? Do they scratch or catch on your clothing? Do they look uneven or thin? Are any broken off? A prong should look like a nice rounded bead sitting on top of your stone. If it’s flat and worn it may be time for a trip to the jeweler.

Inspect stones carefully. Are any missing? Are they loose? Take a tweezer and gently try to move them in place. If they move, have them reset before you lose them.

For necklaces and bracelets, does the clasp hold strong? Are the jump rings that hold the clasp solid or are they thin and worn? If the piece has a safety catch, is it secure? Is the chain thin and worn?

If your jewelry is in good shape, always keep it clean so you can enjoy the full brilliance of your stones. Avanti Jewelers suggests using their specially formulated jewelry cleaner that cleans thoroughly, even underneath set stones.

Should you find any problems with your jewelry, bring it to Avanti Jewelers for an inspection, cleaning or any service needed. Avanti Jewelers, an independent jeweler, offers onsite inspection, repair and  restorations, and the personal service that many chain jewelry stores don’t.
