Archery: A Safe Sport, Coming To a School Near You!

SPONSORED

While archery has been around for over 5,000 years, it doesn't have the reputation for safety that it deserves. This Olympic sport is popular, however, and has benefited from vast improvements over the years. With bows becoming much lighter, faster, and more stable, and with the addition of high-tech accessories, archers are able to hit targets at varied distances with precise accuracy.

At The Archery Place in Montgomery, Coach Kevin Helwig is frequently asked about the safety of archery. "I incorporate safety into beginner lessons starting on day one," explained Helwig, owner of The Archery Place. "I ask my students to rate how safe they think archery is on a scale of 1 to 100, with 1 being the safest sport. Most people estimate the figure is at 50 or a little higher."

Statistically, according to the National Safety Council, archery is actually one of the safest sports and recreational activities for kids and adults. Soccer, basketball, and riding bikes result in significantly higher preventable severe injuries and even deaths when compared to archery.

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) incorporates archery in school P.E. curricula from 4th grade through high school. Archery's rigid structure and constant supervision by teachers who have undergone NASP's instructor training program result in stronger safety statistics. "Archery is a great sport, but some people don't realize how safe it is, nor do they understand the many other beneficial aspects of the sport," added Helwig, who is a NASP trainer and has helped incorporate archery into several area schools for the 2019-20 year. "NASP claims the only "ball sport" safer than archery (when it comes to emergency room injuries) is ping pong. While it seems silly to compare the two, archery is actually one of the top 5 safest sports. Don't be surprised if you have archery in your school soon!"

If you'd like to have archery in your school, have your principal contact The Archery Place for details on starting a program.
