Blue skies and a welcome cool breeze welcomed Yorkville areas residents Thursday morning as the city kicked off its annual Fourth of July celebration with a parade along Game Farm Road and Somonauk Street.
It took about an hour for all of the floats and groups participating in the parade to make their way onto the route from Yorkville High School. The parade included club sports teams, local churches, community groups and political figures.
Following the parade, the Yorkville community was welcomed to Tower Square Park, for games, bounce houses, food and a performance of patriotic songs by the Yorkville Community Band.
"It's a wonderful day; the sun's out, and thank God there's no rain," Yorkville Mayor John Purcell said.
"It's great to see thousands of people here," he said.
The city concluded the Independence Day festivities that evening with fireworks at the corner of Route 47 and Countryside Parkway.
