BitCoin ATM phone scam costly for Yorkville resident

Yorkville police are investigating a phone call scam that cost a Yorkville resident almost $3,000.

Police said the victim, a resident of Ellsworth Drive, told officers of receiving a fraudulent phone call at 5:08 p.m. Oct. 7. The victim reported losing $2,980 when he deposited the money into a Bitcoin ATM.

Bitcoin, according to bitcoin.org, is an online, decentralized cryptocurrency with no central bank or authority. The management of transactions and issuing of Bitcoin is instead controlled on a peer-to-peer level.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
