YORKVILLE – One detective who helped to investigate international high technology crimes involving children was named the employee of the year for the Kendall County Sheriff's office.
Sheriff's officials said in a Thursday, Feb. 6 news release that Det. Tom Hagerty was nominated by a fellow employee of the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office Operations Division for his "exemplary performance over the past year," the release said. Sheriff's officials said in the release Hagerty has demonstrated a commitment to the mission and values of the Kendall County Sheriff’s office.
Hagerty started his career with the sheriff’s office in April 2008, the release said. He is currently a special investigator with the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office, along with being assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children task force and responsible for investigating high technology crimes involving children.
Hagerty received a cyber tip in January 2019 through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, or NCMEC, regarding a social media user disseminating child pornography. He obtained multiple court orders to gather further information and ultimately identified a ring of individuals sharing child pornography on social media, according to the release.
Hagerty also identified an individual who may have been sexually abusing his child in the United Kingdom. He worked with the Department of Homeland Security and the UK police who were able to identify and arrest the individual and save the child from potential future abuse.
Further investigations have been initiated into numerous additional social media accounts in other jurisdictions as a result of Hagerty’s work, sheriff's officials said in the release. Hagerty’s involvement in this global investigation required hard work and dedication to prevent further acts of violence being perpetrated against children.
The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office employee recognition program is focused on recognizing employees for their performance and helps identify those employees who deserve special recognition whenever their duties are performed in an exemplary manner. Sheriff's officials also said in the news release citizens may also be recognized under this program for an act deserving of recognition.
Award nominations may be submitted to the sheriff's office web page at www.co.kendall.il.us/sheriff or in person at the sheriff's office, 1102 Cornell Lane in Yorkville.
