I was driving on Route 38 recently and was taken aback to see a yard sign that read 'Pritzker Sucks.' At that same moment, I heard a news report on the radio that said that on July 12, Florida saw more than 15,000 new cases of coronavirus. In Illinois on that same day, there were 825 new cases. This massive difference can be traced directly to the different approaches taken by the governors over the past few months.
Governor Pritzker took a science-based approach, closing down schools and businesses early and opening up gradually — and only when the number of new infections had dropped to a recommended level. The experts agree that this cautious approach saved many lives and will hopefully lead to a reopening that doesn’t result in a spike of infections. And it’s a safe bet that if that happens, the governor will take action.
Governor DeSantis took a different approach. He was confident that all would be fine when he reopened Florida fully, even as cases were rising at the end of April. It was time to get back to business. The result has been a disaster, but the governor hasn’t backed down in the face of exploding numbers of cases and deaths.
I think the resentment towards Governor Pritzker is politically motivated and sadly misguided. Hate the virus, not the man who’s doing his best to keep the people of this state safe. I for one thank him for a job well done.
