Small businesses in the state are struggling, and the main focus of state Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, in Springfield is to support those businesses in his district and in Illinois.

We believe that Wheeler is the best choice for state representative for Illinois’ 50th District over challenger Democrat Kate Monteleone of Campton Hills.

Wheeler, an Oswego resident and longtime small business owner, was elected as representative in 2014, 2016 and 2018. He has served on several committees, including the public utilities committee, executive committee, cyber security, data analytics and IT committee and revenue and finance committee, among others.

“We need to send a better message to small businesses in the state that we want to support them, encourage them and give them an environment where they can grow, and hire our neighbors who are struggling,” he said in an interview conducted by Shaw Media and the Daily Herald.

Not only does Wheeler pledge to better support small businesses, he said he will fight for the state to better fund public schools, thus reducing the burden of property taxes on residents.

According to her campaign site, Monteleone works as a consultant to nonprofit organizations and is the executive director for a network of area food pantries. She said she will work to keep communities safer by supporting firearm safety laws and promoting clean energy. She pledged to stand against corruption in state government by supporting an independent ethics review and fair representation in 2021 redistricting.

While we commend Monteleone for her commitment to also working for affordable property taxes, affordable health care and reproductive rights, Wheeler’s experience will continue to benefit small businesses and families in the district.
