Brenart Eye Clinic celebrates 40 years of service in Yorkville

Family-owned businesses are key to growth and innovation within a community, and Brenart Eye Clinic has been a cornerstone in Yorkville for 40 years.

Founded in 1979, Brenart Eye Clinic has grown from an in-home office to one of Illinois’ largest multi-disciplinary clinics, helping tens of thousands of patients.

“Our services have expanded to include general ophthalmology, cornea subspecialty, and retinal surgery,” said Dr. Robert W. Brenart, founder of Brenart Eye Clinic. “We also have a dry eye clinic and a specialty contact lens clinic. Our staff now numbers over 52 people. Who would’ve thought after starting in an office of only 800 square feet this is where we would be now?”

The practice opened in the home of Dr. Robert and Margo Brenart.

“My wife and I quickly decided that practicing in our home with little ones wasn’t working well for us,” Brenart said. “Margo and I decided that if we were going to live in the community, we also wanted to work in the community. We moved our practice into a small suite in town.”

The Brenart family has witnessed the rapid development of Yorkville, once a town without stoplights, and has grown with the community. After expanding the clinic in its original location, Dr. Brenart purchased a building within a new duplex on Route 126.

“We purchased that building and thought that using half of it would last us a long time, but again the community with its incredible support had convinced us we needed to expand further,” Brenart said. “We then took over the entire building.”

“We were incredibly thankful for the acceptance of our practice by the medical community, and I can’t emphasize enough the amount of help we received in zoning and engineering from the city leaders at that time,” Brenart continued.

In that time, Dr. Lisa Morris joined the practice, along with Dr. William Fagman and Dr. Ross Mlsna. Mary Melick and Mary Brummel have also played integral roles on the staff as the clinic continued to grow.

Then, 20 years ago with the help of Jim Ratos, Brenart Eye Clinic built its present location where it thrives today.

“Since that time, we have been fortunate to have both my daughter (Dr. Nicole Zangler) and son (Dr. Rob Brenart) join the practice as doctors, and my sons-in-law as a COO and as a fabricating optician. Most recently, our oldest granddaughter, Willow, has begun her technical training in the clinic.”

The Brenart “family” of doctors has continued to expand with the addition of Dr. Mike Sperlakis who started over 10 years ago and who has helped build the specialty contact lens clinic.

“Recently, Dr. Carolyn Dienes, Dr. Barbara Tylka and Dr. Caryn La Buda have joined the growing team of Optometrists.  Brenart is excited to offer an expanded level of care to the community with their expert team.

Whether you need a general eye exam or treatment for a more complex condition, the team at Brenart Eye Clinic provides undivided attention.
