4 Things to Know About Attic Insulation

SPONSORED

Most people don’t consider their attic to be an area of the home that can offer significant savings on heating and cooling costs throughout the year.  If your attic is properly insulated and ventilated, it will help control the temperature and comfort level inside the home.  Here are 4 things to know about attic insulation:

1. If warm air (during winter) or cool air (during summer) is escaping through the attic, your furnace and air conditioner have to work longer to maintain the temperature you’ve set on your thermostat.  If you install additional attic insulation, or upgrade to a higher quality of insulation, your HVAC system won’t have to work as hard, which can lower your utility bills up to 20%.

2.  Insulation is rated in terms of its R-Value, which measures thermal resistance.  Homes in colder climates, like northern Illinois, should have a minimum of R-49 insulation.  Roll-on insulation is the easiest to install and is usually the most economical.  Blown-in insulation is an upgrade, and may be more moisture-resistant and better at preventing air leaks.  Spray foam insulation is the most energy-efficient and has a longer life expectancy.

3.  Old attic insulation may need to be replaced, as it makes a comfortable spot for rodents, insects, and birds to nest in.  Even if your home is newer, these creatures can sometimes find ways into the attic, and they will be happy to live in your attic insulation.  If you suspect you may have mice or other pests in your attic, schedule an inspection right away.

4.  If your energy bills seem higher than usual, you could have leaks in the attic.  The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that homeowners have their attic insulation inspected once a year.  If you have a roof repair or replacement, the insulation should be inspected.
