When you hear the term “chamber of commerce,” what comes to mind? The reality could be different than what you think. Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce President Angie Hibben dispels some common myths about the organization:
Myth 1: It is an advertising agency
Not so, said Hibben. “But we do promote our members’ businesses,” she said.
Myth 2: It operates as a government organization
It is actually a non-governmental institution. “But we do ‘watchdog’ local, state and federal governments for the interest of the local business community regarding taxation, legislation,” Hibben said.
When it comes to the writing and passage of laws and regulations that affect business, the chamber has no direct role. “We do, however, offer a legislative group that gives updates from our legislators on local, state and federal laws and happenings,” Hibben said.
Myth 3: It is a taxing body
Nope. “But the local township, village and other taxing bodies are members of the chamber,” said Hibben.
Myth 4: It is a group of educators
No. “But we do try to set the facts straight regarding free enterprise and the positive role of commerce in America,” Hibben said.
The Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce regularly brings in speakers and hosts seminars to engage members.
Myth 5: All chambers are the same
In reality, every chamber is unique, with different benefits, resources and opportunities.
“But our end goal is the same: to serve as an influential voice and power that stands for the wellbeing of the local business environment,” Hibben said. “This includes helping to promote local businesses and improve their growth.”
Myth 6: The chamber membership model is exclusive
“It is open to anyone desiring to invest in the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce and work for the betterment of our area,” Hibben said.
